Mogford Prize 2022 Competition Terms & Conditions

  1. THE COMPETITION
    1. Open to any author (UK and International) over the age of 18 by the Competition closing date.
    2. Competition opens Monday 8 November 2021 and closes at noon (UK GMT) on Wednesday 12 January 2022.
    3. All submitted stories (no poems or scripts) must have food and/or drink at the centre of the narrative.
    4. Submitted stories should be a maximum of 2500 words excluding the title. Submitted stories should observe the following conventions:
      1. Be no more than a maximum of 2500 words excluding the title
      2. Typed in English only
      3. Display the word count on the first page of the document
      4. Contain no identifying information
      5. Submitted as a .doc or .docx file only
      6. Please note that any entry that contains identifying details such as a name or contact details will be automatically disqualified.
    5. Entries must be the original work of the entrant and not previously published anywhere else, including online or as an audio recording. Entries must not contain anything defamatory, obscene, illegal or otherwise inappropriate as may be deemed by the Promoter.
    6. It costs £15 for each submitted story to be paid via the online submissions form. Multiple entries are allowed but each entry will incur a separate £15 fee and each entry must be submitted individually via the online submissions form.
    7. The Mogford Prize will give up to 10 free entries to writers who are on a low income. Free entries are limited to a single free entry per author. Free entries are granted to any author who self identifies as being on a low income. Those who wish to claim a free entry should contact us via our contact form using the dedicated tick box before they submit their story using the online submissions form. . Free entries will be granted on a first-come, first-served basis until all 10 are claimed.
  2. OUR CHARITIES
    1. In 2021, the Mogford Prize made a £5000 donation to PEN International. The Mogford Prize reserves the right to revise this figure based on financial circumstances. Any changes will be made clear on the Website.
  3. THE JUDGING PROCESS
    1. All valid entries received before the Closing Date will be reviewed by an initial reader who will draw up a longlist of stories. A shortlist will be drawn up by Jeremy Mogford and the winner will be decided on by Jeremy Mogford and 2 guest judges. The Judges’ decision is final. No correspondence will be entered into.
    2. Judging is fair and unbiased. The Mogford Prize reserves the right to change the panel of judges without notice.
    3. There will be a longlist of 25 stories, a shortlist of 4 stories and a single overall winner.
  4. ENTRIES, COPYRIGHT, PUBLICATION AND PUBLICITY
    1. Entrants will retain worldwide copyright in their submitted entries, however, by entering, all entrants license the Mogford Prize a worldwide royalty-free perpetual license to edit, publish and use each shortlisted entry in any and all media (including print and online) for publicity and news purposes relating to this competition. The Promoter is under no obligation to publish any entries. Please note, any publication of an entry does not mean that entrant has won a prize.
    2. Winning entrants agree to participate in reasonable publicity relating to this Competition, including but not limited to having their full published with their entry.

  5. COMPETITION GENERAL TERMS AND CONDITIONS
    1. Unless otherwise specified, the competition open to any writer in any country aged 18 by the closing date of the competition except employees of The Oxford Collection and their associated, affiliated or subsidiary companies,
    2. Entries to the prize are unlimited. The winner is responsible for ensuring they are able to accept the prize as set out and in accordance with these terms and conditions, in the event they are unable to do so then the Mogford Prize reserves the right to award the prize to another entered story.
    3. An eligible entrant must be an individual, must enter on their own behalf, must not be a previous Mogford Prize 1st prize award winner, and must submit an entry in the form requested by the Mogford Prize under this promotion.
    4. By entering, all eligible entrants agree to abide by each and all these terms and conditions. Misrepresentative or fraudulent entries will invalidate an entry. the Mogford Prize reserves the right, with or without cause, to exclude entrants and withhold prizes for violating any of these terms and conditions. The Mogford Prize reserves the right to amend these terms and conditions. Any amendments will be published on the Website.
    5. Winners may be required to submit valid identification before receiving their prize.
    6. The Judges’ decision is final and binding on the entrants. No correspondence will be entered into.
    7. The Mogford Prize will not be liable for technical, hardware, or software failures of any kind or lost or unavailable network connections that may limit or prohibit an eligible entrant’s ability to participate in the competition. Other than death or personal injury arising from the acts or omissions of the Mogford Prize or its employees, we will not be liable for any loss or damage arising out of the winner’s (or their guest’s) enjoyment of the prize.
    8. By entering, any subsequent prize winners agree to allow the free use of their full , photographs and general locations for publicity and news purposes during this and future promotions by the Mogford Prize or any associated or subsidiary company.
    9. Uses of personal data received by the Mogford Prize in the course of the promotion are subject to the privacy policy found on the Website. Winners’ names may be published on the Website.
    10. All entrants will be asked to agree to these terms and conditions as part of the submission process.
    11. The Mogford Prize reserves the right at any time to cancel, modify or supersede the competition (including altering prizes) if, in our sole discretion, a competition is not capable of being conducted as specified. The Mogford Prize reserves the right to substitute a prize of equal value in the event that circumstances beyond their control make this unavoidable.
